FBI Atlanta: Apalachee High Shooter Colt Gray Was Under Investigation for Threats Last Year

The FBI's Atlanta Division announced Wednesday night that it had investigated threats last year involving Colt Gray, then 13 years old, now the suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting.

In May 2023, the National Threat Operations Center received anonymous tips about online threats regarding a potential school shooting at an unspecified time and location, according to an FBI Atlanta post on X (formerly Twitter).

The threats included images of firearms, and the FBI traced the posts to Jackson County, Georgia. The evidence was handed over to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, which interviewed Gray and his father. The father confirmed having hunting guns in the home but stated that Gray did not have "unsupervised access" to them.

The post stated that there was no probable cause for an arrest or further law enforcement action at the time. However, Jackson County notified local schools to monitor the individual.

Apalachee High School is located in Barrow County and is not part of the Jackson County school system. It remains unclear whether Gray attended a school in Jackson County before transferring to the Barrow County School District.
